When a slow-moving story is combined with a deliberately paced narration, an audiobook can seem much longer than the time it actually takes to listen to it. So it is here with the story of the Campbell family, whose members are struggling to regain their equilibrium after the return of teenaged Justin four years after he was kidnapped. Both author and narrator seem reluctant to get moving. It's hard to decide whether Johnston's book is actually a bit pretentious or Mark Bramhall's contrived performance makes it seem that way. While Johnston's writing and Bramhall's narration do complement each other, that doesn't mean they enhance each other. G.S.D. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2014]
