Jonathan Keeble gives a convincing narration of Hurley's riveting police procedural. In the last DS Suttle outing, the investigator left Portsmouth's big-city violence for bucolic Devon. This time, Suttle faces a diabolical killer. A man's murdered body is discovered in his car on a remote country road, with an infant unhurt on the back seat. More murders of seemingly random targets follow, and Suttle is immersed in the mystery. Keeble's performance allows the subplots to merge seamlessly and each character to evolve. He offers finely drawn portraits of Hurley's fascinating secondary characters--from the baby's career-driven mother to Suttle's roommate, a gay physician, and a military-trained weapons expert.
