ON THE LIPS OF CHILDREN

Fair warning, this is a disturbing novel about near feral children who are forced to eat people to survive in San Diego. Narrator Bob Dunsworth makes this grisly story even more realistic with his spot-on portrayals of the children, their damaged parents, and the emotionally driven heroes, Macon and Erin. It's a short audiobook, with palpable tension throughout as Macon, Erin, and their daughter are captured by the feral people, who live in an abandoned drug-smuggling tunnel. The heroes are flawed, the villains are crazy, the ghoulish children are victims--and the ending may not really be an ending at all, but the beginning of a sequel.
