Christopher Evan Welch's strong and spirited presentation enhances this outstanding tale. Welch skillfully presents the appealing Tom Ward as he learns the ins and outs of being a spook's apprentice. Most exciting is Tom's verbal sparring with some very creepy-sounding tricksters. A bit of fun enters an otherwise dark story when the cat who does the cooking purrs as her delicious cooking is complimented by hungry men. Conversations about Tom's family and his mixed reaction to being saved by Alice Dean bring reality to the story.
