Joshilyn Jackson tries hard to connect emotionally with this quirky story. Astronomers George and Irene meet at the university in Toledo, Ohio, where Irene studies black holes, George use the stars try to prove God's existence, and both dabble in role-playing games. Jackson reads the shifting narrative in smooth phrases that contrast dramatically with her choppy reading of the dialogue. High-pitched male voices along with other harsh, distorted tones contrast oddly with the childlike voices of females. Explicit and disturbing sex scenes are read in matter-of-fact tones, coming off as crude descriptions without emotion. Overall, the exaggerated emotional tones and moods of this production make for chaotic listening. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2014]
