When Elnora's father drowned in the Limberlost Swamp so many years ago, all her mother's human feelings drowned with him, and Elnora has had to find her way in the world alone. The swamp that took her father has become her mother, friend, and way into the world. She has learned its lore, studied its creatures, and harvested its treasure of moths and plants, parlaying them all for the education she so desperately craves. Christina Moore's narrative recreates the hopeful energy and excitement of this adventure. At the same time, it is faithful to Porter's unusual characters. Youthful Elnora, gentle Uncle Wesley, and Aunt Margaret contrasts sharply with the harsh vigor of the merciless Kate Comstock.
