In an audiobook this extensive and deep, it's vital to have a narrator who can carry the story. Paul Hecht does an admirable job as the author explores the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer as well as his theology. This second aspect could become tiresome as performed by a lesser narrator, but Hecht keeps the discussion from sounding pedantic, particularly during Bonhoeffer's prison years, when his religious thinking was its deepest. Hecht varies his voice to match the tone of the passages, adding appropriate inflections to moments of humor and irony. The author uses the German titles of several books, articles, and even hymns--often without following with an English translation. Hecht handles these nicely.
