Narrator Rachel Atkins lifts this mystery from good to compelling through her terse performance. The plot revolves around socialite Charlotte Alton, who has another existence as Karla, operator of an organization trafficking in information and often playing on the wrong side of the law. Trouble comes, and Karla needs to save multiple parties, including herself. Atkins knows how to build tension. Her performance is almost abrupt, a tone that is perfect for this suspenseful, action-driven thriller. She also uses accents to good effect. Her versions of the villains are terrifying--a true mark of performing excellence. G.S.D. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2014]
