SHIKSA GODDESS (Or How I Spent My Forties)

Award-winning playwright and essayist Wasserstein is smart, funny, and committed to good works. She is not, however, a good reader. She has an ugly voice and a flat style. Yet these faults seem almost assets in this anthology of magazine pieces commenting on today's American culture. For what she lacks in technique adds to the sense of sincerity and plays against the sophistication of her writing, thus making the articles more personal and inviting than they are on the page. Y.R.
