THE ANIMALS OF FARTHING WOOD

Narrators Paul Whitehouse and Esther Coles alternate chapters in Dann's masterful story of a varied group of animals and birds who flee their precious home as humans increasingly encroach on it. The splendid deliveries of Whitehouse and Coles add awe, beauty, and reality to the narrative of the perilous journey. Each creature is distinct, with the leaders--Fox, Badger, and Kestrel--having greater individuality. Most amusing is Adder, who is contrary and sarcastic, with hisses to match. The moving lesson regarding man's responsibility in causing problems for creatures living in nature inspired a popular animated TV series in Europe. Whitehouse's and Coles's marvelous presentations ensure that young listeners will experience all the joys and sorrows of the animals as they ultimately reach their new home.
