For Andy Dalziel (aka The Fat Man) and Peter Pascoe aficionados, here is the latest detective tale in the series. However, this one is much more complex than the previous books, and that presents a problem for the listener. Graham Roberts’s narration is excellent. He captures The Fat Man's personality and Yorkshire dialect perfectly and does an equally fine job with the many other characters, each of whom is voiced. There are two stories being told here in alternating chapters; one is of Pascoe's ancestors, which starts with the death of his grandmother and is told in flashbacks by his grandfather during WWI, and the second is the case he and Dalziel are working on. The two come together in the end, but both the telling and the ending are difficult to follow in audio if you haven't read the book. S.S.R. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/ MAR 02]
