The beginning of this book may seem more confusing than intriguing for its unnamed stranger, graveside meeting, broken bargain, and obscure references to the deaths of a great uncle and a grandmother. Quickly Michael Kitchen enthralls the listener, not only with the burden of the protagonist's search for truth, but also with the author's startlingly perfect descriptions. Kitchen's British accent suits Goddard's damp Cornwall setting, as well as his Cornish family secrets. Kitchen concisely enunciates, speeds up his pace for excitement, weights words for emphasis, and subtly changes pitch for differentiation of characters, never muddling this gripping mystery, which looks back generations to untangle its wicked web.
