It is 1988, and the Cold War is wheezing toward an exhausted conclusion. But as all readers of Len Deighton know, Bernard Samsom will be the last person to get the word. Even should there be a complete cessation of hostilities, there are enough unexplained events in Bernard's past to keep him busy for some time to come. James Faulkner gives Bernard an appropriately tired, sometimes downtrodden, voice and makes each of the male characters distinct. His women, however, all sound alike.
