Whitbread Award-winning author Jane Gardam shares the pre-college summer of three girls in this story of life and love in post-war England. It's a deceptively quiet book about the personal dramas that shape our lives. June Barrie reads the nuances of Gardam's story well and leaves the silences nicely unadorned (except by the listener's thoughts). She doesn't differentiate many of the characters vocally, so it can be confusing when they are talking to each other. But all in all, an involving listen. A.C.S.
