PALE HORSE COMING

The sheer power of some novels is enough to mesmerize the listener. Combine that intensity with a superb reading, and the result is Stephen Hunter's PALE HORSE COMING. This story about a brutal racist prison features efforts by attorney Sam Vincent and Police Sergeant Earl Swagger to stop the injustices that occur at this Mississippi facility. Jay O. Sanders's performance is flawless. He defines each character with a rare clarity of voice, giving each a distinct personality. Like an actor in the role of a lifetime, Sanders seems to dig ever deeper during the final chapters, when Swagger and his men square off for the final showdown. Although this abridgement never leaves the listener feeling cheated, Sanders's masterful reading does leave the listener wanting more. D.J.S.
