Ashley Patterson, a computer graphics designer in Seattle who lives a quiet life, is being stalked. She has periods of blackouts and is arrested for a string of brutal murders. As her lawyer struggles to save her life, she begins to remember terrible secrets. The many characters of the novel--police, killer, murder victim, and the confused Ashley--are well portrayed by narrator Donna Hunter. The softness of Ashley's voice contrasts with the sometimes hard-edged police, as well as with the desperation of Ashley's attorney as he conducts a seemingly impossible defense. Hunter is adept at conveying the emotions of terror, fear, and hope as we follow Ashley through the trial and beyond. Fans of Sheldon and legal thrillers should find this a satisfying production.
