Jay O. Sanders

Jay O. Sanders has narrated more than twenty-five audiobooks over the last five years, including works by Greg Iles, Dean Koontz, Joyce Carol Oates, Tony Hillerman, William Gibson, and John Sanford, under the auspices of eight publishers. He continues to travel freely among films, theater, television and audiobooks, having most recently opened in the films KISS THE GIRLS and THE MATCHMAKER, guest-starred in the premiere episode of ABC's controversial new series "Nothing Sacred," and narrated the newly released SERPENT'S TOOTH by Faye Kellerman for Simon & Schuster. Despite having spent twenty years on and off Broadway and in regional theaters, performing everything from Shakespeare and Shaw to Shepard, Jay is best known for his roles in films and television productions, such as JFK, ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD, HBO's HOSTAGES (in which he played Terry Anderson), and for his appearances on "Roseanne" as Dan's biker buddy, "Ziggy." He will be appearing as an Amish farmer opposite Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley in FOR RICHER OR POORER this December and with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in THE ODD COUPLE II sometime beyond. He lives in New York City's Greenwich Village with his wife, actress Maryann Plunkett, and their 3-year-old son, Jamie.--December 1997

December 2007 Update
Joseph Heller’s CATCH-22, W.E.B. Griffin’s THE HUNTERS, and doing the honors with Peter Jay Fernandez for James Patterson’s CROSS highlight his audiobook year.

December 2006 Update
Jay's stage and film work has kept him busy this year. He played George W. Bush in David Hare's "Stuff Happens" at New York's Public Theater, and his films "Half Nelson" and "The Pleasure of Your Company" are both out on the indie circuit. He wrapped up a fifth season of public TV's "Wide Angle," and an episode on bird flu he narrated was nominated for an Emmy. Jay is set to record THE HUNTERS, the new W.E.B. Griffin book from the presidential agent series.

December 2005 Update
J
ay just wrapped up hosting the Emmy Award-winning TV series "Wide Angle," and has completed workshop productions of new plays with Vassar College's New York Stage and Film. Glad to be returning to audiobook narration, he has just recorded the new W. E. B. Griffin book HOSTAGE, and, with wife Mary Ann Plunkett, has recorded stories for a new children's Web site, OneMoreStory.com.

December 2004 Update
Jay continued narration for PBS’s Wide Angle and was part of a performance of “Likely Stories,” an AudioFile-sponsored live reading event. We missed hearing new audiobooks from Jay.

December 2003 Update
Jay's recording of MY LOSING SEASON by Pat Conroy made the AudioFile list of Best Audiobooks of the Year. Jay connected to the memoir in a way that exemplifies the skill of this Golden Voice actor. MACBETH, performed last summer on the Boston Common, was the highlight of Jay’s year in theater. He also performed Russell Banks's "The Moor" in the Selected Shorts series. His busy film schedule includes the upcoming feature THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW and a TV movie, THE BELTWAY SNIPER. Jay continued narration for PBS’s WIDE ANGLE and was recently part of The Library of America’s live poetry readings in New York City.

December 2001 Update
The project most exciting to Jay this year has been the fall production of LONE STAR LOVE or THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, TEXAS, directed by Peter Bogdanov at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland. Jay plays Falstaff in this musical Western based on Shakespeare's MERRY WIVES. The enthusiastic response may push the production to brighter lights--Broadway, perhaps? Jay appeared in the movie ALONG CAME A SPIDER based on the Alex Cross mystery by James Patterson. In the venue of audiobooks, Jay completed another thriller by Stephen Hunter, PALE HORSE COMING. Even though we've mostly heard Jay in hard-edged suspense novels, Jay keeps an eye out for opportunities to record well-crafted fiction.

December 2000 Update
Jay has been very busy this year, but outside the world of audiobooks. We did hear Jay narrating STALKER by Faye Kellerman and HOT SPRINGS by Stephen Hunter. Jay continues to express his interest in recording literary titles, but thrillers were again his mÄtier. In theater work Jay and his wife, Maryann Plunkett, were involved in a staged reading workshop of THE HURDY-GURDY MAN, a play they've been involved with for over two years and which continues to move toward a New York run. Current filming of THE LAST BRICKLAYER in America with Sidney Poitier and a TV miniseries, "Widows," keeps Jay busy with plenty of roles, though unlike his work with audiobooks, only one character at a time.

December 1999 Update
Deft at defining characters through inflection and nuance, Jay has lots of thrillers and Dean Koontz titles to his credit. Check MR. MURDER or DRAGON TEARS.

December 1998 Update
After recording several thrillers this year by authors Tom Clancy, Steve Martini and Faye Kellerman, Jay is concerned that he's being typecast as a tough guy. His deep, authoritative voice lends itself to the these characters, but his experience and interest in classical theater compel him to seek more complex roles. He's attracted to audiobook work, in the midst of a busy film and theater career, because of the challenges narration can offer the actor. He has his eye out for a Dickensian role. Of the audiobooks he completed this year, Jay is most pleased with SACRIFICE by Mitchell Smith and MORTAL FEAR by Greg Iles.
