Golden Voices

AudioFile editors celebrate the Golden Voices of audiobooks. This Hall of Fame showcases top narrators for their exceptional audiobook work. We celebrate these actors for their commitment to the craft of audiobook narration and for their achievements in spoken-word recordings.

The voice of the narrator is the Muse of audiobooks.
The audio experience is controlled by what we hear. And what we hear is more than just words. We hear the rhythm and the rhyme, the tone and the tension of the voice behind the microphone.

Narrators, our personal storytellers, make our experience memorable, inspiring, or absorbing. Sometimes we notice what the narrator adds; sometimes the narrator is invisible. The voice is the vehicle that brings the words into our minds’ imagination.

The actor must use the words the author dictates, but the voice colors the context, the emotional weight, the emphasis. The actor takes the cues and makes all the artistic decisions. The interpretations and the reading style are dramatic choices. Weaving each element into a whole, the actor creates a tapestry. Some actors do it intuitively and cannot describe how they do it. Some speak about it eloquently.

We celebrate actors who are brilliant at audiobook narration. We salute them not only for what they do, but also for their dedication to this burgeoning art form. These talented narrators have defined the craft of audiobook narration.

Some are subtle, understated narrators. Some viscerally and passionately make a story their own. Some define and stretch the artistic limits of oral interpretation. Some create the intimacy of a storyteller's bond. We admire the sheer beauty of voices as the wonders of language and characters come alive.

The best narrators have a masterful sense of pacing, knowing when to create a subtle, introspective atmosphere and when to be relentless. They also know when to disappear and become an invisible channel of words. Each narrator, reader, actor, storyteller's voice brings the words just to the listener. We have a unique and intimate bond with these voices and the actors who create them.

We want you to know these voices.
