When asked when he would fill the Jewish seat on the Supreme Court, the narrator, imitating Richard Nixon's whispering, paranoid voice to perfection, answers, "When I am dead, maybe." In his third book, John Dean, Nixon's legal counsel, presents some intimate Oval Office conversations during a few months of vetting candidates for four Supreme Court positions, William Rehnquist being the last nominee. Most of the quotations were recorded on Nixon's famous taping system. By imitating only the strange and mercurial president's voice, Michael Rafkin magnifies a villainous portrait of the only chief executive who claimed he wasn't a crook. His ingenious audio interpretation of this material makes this history entertaining. J.A.H. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 02]
