ALL SOULS' NIGHT

Narrator Matt Godfrey excels in delivering these subtle horror stories. Standouts include "The Whistle," in which Mr. Penwin unexpectedly brings home an Alsatian, much to his wife's chagrin. He promises that Beck, the chauffeur, will control the dog. Godfrey's pace and measured tone build up suspense until the heartbreaking yet mysterious conclusion. "The Silver Mask" is one of Walpole's masterpieces. Wealthy Sonia Herries is kind and lonely until a manipulative young stranger takes over her life. Listeners will hang on every word as the nameless man moves into her home and convinces her friends that she's ill and being cared for. In "The Ruby Glass," Godfrey displays his wit with delightful kids, Hamlet the dog, and an upbeat climax. It's a treat to hear Walpole at his best.
