Mystery & Suspense • 9 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2017

No matter how high narrator George Guidall sets the bar, he's over it with daylight showing and off to the showers while the rest are still getting their shoes on. This audiobook needs a pro, too, as the intercut past-and-present structure of it offers plenty of scope for confusion. A very old man dies in his bed, but not a natural death. Who would bother to murder a nonagenarian? When you learn that the deceased once investigated a never-solved murder in the "shadow district" of Reykjavik during the war, you know where you're going, roughly. Guidall, with his warm, patient, world-weary voice makes an exotic world immediate, both strange and accessible. Indridason is a practiced maker of noir puzzles. This is a fine one. B.G.
