What a strange and compelling tale Australian author Gary Crew tells here. Set in Queensland, Australia, in the mid-nineteenth century, this is the story of a man haunted by the unsolved murder of his wife and daughter, a circus sideshow boy who can speak with the dead, a stablehand who may be other than he seems, and a troublesomely naïve housemaid. It all begins with the words, "Strange how a simple incident can change a life. If I had not dropped my cane, I might never have seen the blood on the boy's ankle." Hooked already, aren't you? Michael Veitch reads with just the right tone of understated emotion, letting the writing speak, rather than forcing the story with verbal tricks. His pacing is perfect--quick yet clear when the plot demands and replete with enough pauses for the listener to consider the oddity of the action. A terrific listen.
