THE IRON ROAD is a story about the building of the Great Western Railway across Cornwall, England, in 1865. As the "navies" (men who were highly specialized in railway construction) found employment in the area, its Christian residents had difficulty coping with their rambunctious lifestyles. Patricia Gallimore gives an excellent performance and shows an uncanny ability to authenticate dialects with precision. Her portrayal of these vastly different men and women, who find themselves drawn into unexpected relationships, is touching, insightful, and full of intensity. Gallimore gives listeners a history lesson filled with enjoyment. B.J.P. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/ MAR 04]
