Rebecca Macauley capably narrates this enduring love story, which spans America and Australia and echoes throughout generations. For myriad reasons, Charlie and Kitty are star-crossed lovers who met in Hawaii and were forever separated by the events of December 7, 1941. It is only on Kitty's deathbed that the truth of their love comes back into focus, launching Kitty's granddaughter into a search of her grandmother's past. The story is sprawling, and Macauley has her hands full with the variety of characters, American and Australian, that populate it over time. Her strengths lie with the female characters, in particular the young Kitty, whose breathless tenacity belies her vulnerability, and Kit, the granddaughter, who is wrestling with her own romantic trauma.
