Listeners will find this a well-matched dual narration by Stella Bloom and Lance Greenfield. Struggling single mother Adeline Forrester wants to date family friend Tobias Gamble, but both worry about their families' reactions. Bloom has a birdlike chirp that pleasantly mirrors Addie's determination to persevere through difficult times. Her male voices are startlingly realistic, demonstrating her wide vocal range. Greenfield is equally skilled with a low, gravelly voice for Tobias. He portrays Tobias's mother-figure, Margot, with a slight Southern accent to go with the Kentucky setting. While authorial choices mar a notable audio experience--Addie's repetitive comments about how great their relationship is and her constant acquiescence to Tobias's demands may grate on listeners' nerves--the strong vocal pairing will help listeners through these uneasy moments.
