The economy of an Australian town depends on whale carcasses. Unfortunately, the whaling business isn't what it used to be, what with all the save-the-whales folks stirring up trouble. But this time one of the town's own is leading the Green charge. Tracey Callander has an enticing Australian accent that perfectly fits the mood and tone of Winton's story. Her characters have real edge and emotions, and she shifts from male to female without a pause. One of her best is a tooth-sucking old saw who's always looking for a scheme.
