Two young women, both with a passion for books, strive for identity amid trying circumstances--200 years apart. Narrator Karissa Vacker's crisp, feminine voice recounts the story of Clarice in the strained tones of a nineteenth-century German aristocrat who is dominated by her abusive husband. Vacker's delivery gains warmth as she describes Clarice's immersion in the art of bookbinding. In a bolder, more contemporary voice, Hillary Huber narrates the account of Sofia, a book restorer in modern-day Rome who discovers one of Clarice's volumes with a hidden message. Huber's delightful Italian accent and ability to distinguish characters are perfectly employed in the many dialogues between Sofia and the rakish book collector Tomaso, who joins in the search for the secrets of Clarice's tale.
