Four excellent performers narrate this coming-of-age story about a Nigerian family that is broken by poverty and politics. Twin sisters Bibike and Ariyike's futures are in limbo when their mother is fired from a high-paying government job. Then their father loses a gamble and eventually wrecks his marriage. When the family comes apart, the twin sisters, along with their two younger brothers, are forced to fend for themselves. Narrators Ron Butler, Liz Femi, Dele Ogundiran, and Miebaka Opuiyo-Yohannes deftly unfold the family dynamics and explore the complexities of living in Lagos, Nigeria. But while they engage listeners with appropriate accents and relaxed pacing, the nonlinear structure of events in the audiobook can be confusing. Still, listeners will be moved by this poignant and raw story about familial love and sacrifice. A.C. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2020]
