Narrator JD Jackson's husky voice creates a neo-noir atmosphere for this short thriller. Jackson adds drama and personality to a well-plotted but rudimentary story, and his bemused narration hints at his understanding of the genre. Jackson's approach elevates the catch-a-serial-killer setup and accelerates the pacing. Deaver has some surprises up his sleeve, and like a three-card monte dealer, his distractions mask the killer's identity until the end. A subplot between a retiring newsman and his young social-media-savvy replacement adds a few sparks. BURIED is as close as listeners may get to a serial killer cozy with humor and political satire--a fast listen without much blood and gore.
