The author creates an even more engaging protagonist, portrayed by Joel Froomkin, in this somewhat sad installment in her John Pickett series. The reformed Pickett, once a pickpocket in Regency London, now wants to change jobs because being a Bow Street Runner endangers his wife, Julia. Then, Runner Maxwell sees a boy who strongly resembles Pickett with two older men who murder a policeman. Tension mounts as Pickett's boss and friend, Magistrate Colquhoun, suggests that Pickett identify the boy and get him away from the killers. Froomkin excels at portraying 10-year-old Kit Pickett. After a moving meeting of the half brothers, John risks his life for Kit, and Julia (six months pregnant) welcomes Kit into their home. Although a bit of a departure from earlier titles, this is an excellent listen. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2021]
