Jonathan Selkirk is a ruthless high-powered solicitor, who is despised by his wife and son. While being investigated for fraud, he is kidnapped as he is recovering from a heart attack and later found murdered. Julia Franklin portrays DI Joanna Piercy as strong and caring, but she is frustrated as she struggles with the investigation, her broken arm encased in a cast, and the arrival of Superintendent Karen Pugh, who believes a known assassin shot Selkirk. Franklin's unique voices for Piercy and Pugh juxtapose opposing investigational approaches: Pugh is arrogant, cynical, tough, and focused on profiling the killer; Piercy is kind, observant, and persistently focused on understanding the crime and its victims.
