This Great Courses audio explores Athenian life during the reign of one of the greatest orators/statesmen in the ancient Greek world. Pericles guided Athens from about 458 B.C. until his death in 429 B.C., and he defined his age. Professor Jeremy McInerney, of the University of Pennsylvania, is an excellent lecturer--organized, easy to follow and, yes, very interesting. McInerney's Australian accent is heard occasionally but adds color to his words. Obviously an expert in his field, he introduces concepts and vocabulary slowly, proceeding with few pauses or distracting verbal habits as he makes connections between his topic and the present day. Above all, the professor combines the two traits that all great teachers possess: knowledge and accessibility. R.I.G. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE/JULY 05]
