THE WORLD AT NIGHT

George Guidall masters the mannered rhythm of Alan Furst's novel, set in Paris just as the German Occupation begins in 1940. The full enormity of the war and what France must endure slowly unfolds for Jean Casson, a celebrated film producer, and his wealthy friends. Guidall exquisitely captures the pride, the idealism, and eventually the weariness of Casson as his life becomes more dangerous and the threat to his friends, lovers, and country accelerates. Guidall handles Casson's introspection clearly and with devastating conviction. The dilemma of collaboration or resistance is beautifully delivered through Guidall's careful pacing and modulated emotions.
