Listeners coming to Graham's fifth book in the Midsomer Murders series after enjoying the TV series may not recognize Barnaby and his deputy, Troy. As John Nettles, television's Barnaby, says in the foreword, books develop more well-rounded characters, with more complex personalities. John Hopkins, with his very British accent, makes all the characters unique and alive. Hopkins sounds patient and conciliatory--up to a point--as Barnaby questions people about the apparent disappearance of Simone Hollingsworth. But frustration seeps into Hopkins's voice as progress stalls. Barnaby's sarcasm is clear as he deals with Parrot, the local constable, whose biggest concern is recognition for the job he does.
