One of life's great pleasures is listening to George Guidall, and this production is no exception. In a quiet but resonant reading style Guidall artfully portrays the myriad compelling characters who populate this Western family saga: Emma, the matriarch; Beth, the beautiful daughter; Tom, the loyal but strong-willed grandson; and Amy, the child who was secretly given up for adoption by Beth. Guidall faithfully delivers the emotional nuances lying behind timeless matters like the yearning for roots, identity, and family connection, as well as the bonds of love. His restrained narration and vocal versatility evoke the strength of the novel, clearly moving its characters toward the decisive moment.
