Katalin Karikó is an incredibly determined scientist from Hungary who won the Nobel Prize, along with Drew Weissman, for discoveries in mRNA that led to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. Eva Magyar, a Hungarian actress with a clear timbre and a Hungarian accent, performs this audiobook with perceptive insight and energy. While it may take a few minutes to get used to the accent--proteins sound like pro-tains, for example--Magyar's voice brings a clear authenticity to Karikó's story of hard work and resiliency. Magyar clearly renders Karikó's deep love of science and its benefits for the world. As a foreign female scientist, Karikó faces numerous obstacles, especially related to funding, and her dismay at the academic world's constant and unending focus on securing grant funding over scientific endeavors is apparent.
