In many ways, Elie Wiesel is both the conscience and the chronicler of the Holocaust. In this memoir, Wiesel focuses not only on the Nazis but also on the many events and people who have shaped his life since his liberation. The result is a stunning, chilling, and yet somehow cautiously optimistic narrative in which Wiesel believes that man's goodwill will overcome and transcend evil. Wiesel reads in a paced yet intense style. While his heavy accent can be somewhat difficult to understand, it forces the listener to focus on his words.
