The Happy Isles of Oceania is a long, wonderful, masterfully written, true-life adventure about kayaking to Pacific Islands. Like many classic seafaring narratives, it’s also a journey of the soul. Michael Prichard reads this book beautifully. His deep, sonorous voice carries the listener. His pace is relaxed, but energetic; pauses are used to emphasize a point; and voice modulations are astute--signaling changes of mood as well as character. Because Theroux’s work is crowded with vivid characters and packed with allusions to other times, other writers, other islands, this is a challenging book to read. Prichard matches his reading talents to Theroux’s writing ability-- a very HAPPY combination. This production should be enjoyed for generations. J.B.
