Ferrone's voice has such bite that listeners might on occasion catch themselves flinching. He growls with a bitterness and fury that is spellbinding. Matched to the right potboiler of a mystery, you couldn't ask for more. Fortunately, Swindle, in his first novel, does his part with this finely wrought mystery. His hero is Jeb Quinlin, an alcoholic Dallas homicide detective sent to rehab to dry out. But just as he begins his recovery, a serial killer embarks on a vicious string of murders against Quinlin's fellow patients. Soon it becomes evident that the detective himself is a target. As with any well-crafted thriller, this one keeps upping the ante. Ferrone performs with such intensity that the tension is almost unbearable. Perfect. M.O.
