EL JUEGO DEL ÁNGEL/ THE ANGEL’S GAME

by | Read by Francisco Rivela

Spanish Audio • 19.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2008

L.R.P. 2010 Audies Finalist

[ENGLISH TRANSLATION]--Francisco Rivela’s intonation and pace magnificently project protagonist David Martín’s emotional upheavals, which drive this novel. Martín, raised by an abusive father, finds solace in books and becomes a writer. But he fails to gain recognition, so he cuts a sinister deal to write a devilishly influential book in exchange for his life and lots of money. Zafón’s fictional universe revolves around an abandoned mansion and the “Cemetery of Forgotten Books” in Barcelona. The first-person narrative allows Rivela to excel in his performance as Martín. However, Rivela’s lack of vocal distinction for some of the other characters is sometimes confusing. Still, this is only a minor deterrent—the pairing of Zafón’s work and Rivela’s interpretation rekindles an explosive and must-hear mystery.
