ANDERSONVILLE The Last Depot

During the height of the American Civil War, the Confederate stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, held as many as 32,000 men in the 14 months of its existence. Almost 13,000 prisoners died of starvation, typhoid fever, scurvy, malaria, wound infections, and smallpox. Narrator Jeremy Gage finds no difficulty with the author's prodigious vocabulary and sophisticated constructions. To add inflection to his reading, he modulates his volume without losing a softened sound. Gage's mature and sandy voice strikes a somber tone as he tells of the pestilent conditions in the prison, which smelled of death, feces and rot. Verbal pictures suffice as we hear the minute details of photographic images taken of the fortress, bringing further shame to the Rebels' fight to preserve slavery.
