As twisted thoughts are revealed, Bryant’s character portrayals are subtle, controlled, and credible. From the deep depression of a mother-to-be to a jilted wife’s confusion and the rabid doctrine of extreme feminists, Rendell never avoids the disturbing elements that torment ordinary people. Wexford knows appearances aren’t always a reliable indication of what seethes below the surface, and Bryant’s performance keeps things rich with human insights.
