MINNIE MCCLARY SPEAKS HER MIND

Valerie Hobbs covers lots of territory in this story, including whistleblowers, war vets, prejudice, gays, and teaching to test scores while killing kids’ own ideas and creativity. It’s sure to appeal to kids and their parents. Narrator Tara Sands energetically presents Minnie as she nervously but confidently stands up for her beloved teacher. Ms. Marks is a new and innovative teacher who gets her pupils to love reading and to ask questions—until she's suspended because some parents fear her methods. Sands also movingly portrays Minnie's uncle, a damaged vet; Amira, Minnie's Muslim friend; and all of the sometimes threatening adult voices.
