The mystery in this story unfolds as the narrative moves between two characters of different ages. Julia Whelan’s vocal flexibility brings to life the concerns of a young woman as well as those of her much older caretaker. Whelan moves swiftly between these contrasting points of view in alternating chapters. The characterization she gives to the young woman lends the story a fairy-tale quality. The raspy voice of the older woman, known as “mother,” evokes the persona of an evil stepmother or witch. Through these contrasts Whelan builds the narrative suspense. Listeners will find this a creative and enjoyable title. M.R. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2012]
