Kate Forbes’s smooth reading conveys the Southern propriety of this inspirational romance, set in the 1890s. Melinda Coleson is determined to spend the rest of her life on Bridal Veil Island, but Evan, the island’s gamekeeper and Melinda’s love interest, hasn’t yet proposed to her. Forbes’s pitch and pacing brings out Mrs. Mifflin’s supercilious nature, dramatizing the reason that the usually compliant and rational Melinda is desperate to quit her employment as a lady’s maid. While there are some oddly timed pauses, Forbes’s narration is clear and articulate, and her range of character voices highlights the characters’ relationships and conflicts.
