Everyone recognizes that writer Mark Stevenson's bestseller fictionalizes real, unsolved serial murders, but no one knows that he has a secret identity that ties him to the real slayings--except a mysterious stranger who sends him on a nationwide scavenger hunt involving even more ghastly deaths and an ultimate showdown. With unflagging determination Richard Ferrone does what he can with this improbable, uneven thriller. He's good--very good--his style of delivery nearly identical to Frank Muller's, though less mannered and more expressive. Yet, he can't help falling into some of the potholes of cliche dug by the author. His achievement is in having steered around all the others.
