The perfect reader was chosen for this Larry McMurtry style tale of a postbellum South struggling with Reconstruction. Tom Stechschulte’s narration is delightfully peppered with suitable characterizations that amplify our enjoyment and provide us with ready identification of the many personalities who appear in the story. The drawl in his voice adds realism and atmosphere, and the occasional mispronunciation by poorly educated individuals gives a nice regional and temporal touch rarely found in audiobooks. Descriptions of the customs of life in 1885 provide educational benefits, as well as entertainment. J.A.H.
