Bella Lowe narrates a romantic suspense that takes place at a remote country estate. Pat Merton has come to Rodington Court for a shooting party, not a house party; however, due to circumstances beyond her control, the event has become unbearably social. Pat is sensible and unflappable, but Lowe also illuminates her caring nature. Fenella Carruth presents a façade that is not at all indicative of her true self. Lowe does an excellent job distinguishing her two sides--and the growing attraction between the two women. When a murder takes place, both women are impacted. While Lowe is skillful in her portrayals of pragmatic Pat and fierce Fen, some of the secondary characters are blurred in dialogue-heavy scenes. The story is generally affecting, and Lowe acquits herself well. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2020]
