While Rufus appears to be a straightforward former military man, Swain expertly teases out his hidden insecurities, especially surrounding his difficulties reading. Swain similarly proves adept with Luke's deeply conflicted feelings regarding his education and family history. Rufus's dreadful uncle and aunt are portrayed as thoroughly horrible and arrogant by Swain, but he allows their three children, Rufus's cousins, the opportunity to redeem themselves and begin their journey of reconciliation.
