DEATH IN THE SPIRES

Listeners will be drawn into this atmospheric and compelling historical mystery. In 1895, Oxford University student Toby is murdered--and his close friends know that one of them must have done it. Jem is one of these "Seven Wonders," and ten years later, with his life falling apart, he sets out to solve the mystery once and for all. As the story moves back and forth in time, narrator Tom Lawrence is especially effective in differentiating Jem's less rarified accent from those of his wealthy, upper-crust peers. Lawrence also conveys Jem's growing desperation as he contacts his old school friends; he doesn't know who he can trust, and the further his investigation goes, the more secrets are revealed and the more danger Jem finds himself in.
